11 january: hanoi day 1

Uninspired post for an uninspired day. We landed in hanoi and decided that we just needed a day to relax and not sightsee. Relaxing involves eating, of course, and we hit two great restaurants for lunch and dinner we'd highly recommend:

- quan an ngon: a local style vietnamese eatery with awesome people watching. Note to anyone over 5' tall -- 'local style' tends to mean you sit on benches approximately one foot off the ground and pretty much assume a squat position. Andrew's legs keep falling asleep during meals.

- wild rice: on the other end of the spectrum we classed it up at this place. For those who have eaten at Foreign Cinema in san francisco, it had a movie playing on a wall with water trickling in front of it, a slate floor and a very sleek white and black decor. It was nice to get out of our hiking apparel for a night and the food was fantastic.

Quick thoughts on hanoi? We're much more enamored with it than saigon, if you had to choose one big city to visit. Incrementally cleaner, more natural beauty with lots of lakes and overall a bit more cosmopolitan with some stylish dressers and a few nice cars here and there (vs. an overwhelming sea of motorbikes). Walking on the streets here feels a bit like you could be at 28th and lex in nyc. Maybe the familiar surroundings helped us feel like we could afford ourselves a day of napping, reading and eating. Or maybe we were just enjoying being lazy.

Next up: sightseeing in hanoi
